We are so busy making hot tubs and barrel saunas at the moment that we don’t have time to make our popular log saunas.
So if you are a handy person and would like to save some money, we’ve designed a brand new package for which we even don’t have a name yet. Let’s call it simple for now – “DIY Log Sauna package”.
The idea here is to supply equipment and materials only and let you make it yourself. You can also hire somebody locally to build it for you. With the new comprehensive instructions – it is not that difficult at all.
The purpose of this article is to give you general idea on how to calculate cost for your sauna. So let’s begin…
Step one is to make sure that you have required tools to cut the timbers and do the job:
Jig saw (or table saw – the best or hand saw – the hardest way 🙂 )
Electric screw driver with bits
You can get cheep brand from any local hardware store (assuming it’s a one off thing for you).
There’s one more option if you want us pre-cut all timbers to measure (no need for you to do the cutting) then you would need only electric screw driver, rubber mallet, plainer and sander.
The cost for us to pre-cut everything (no assemblies) would vary from $440 to $660 depending on sauna size. You might take that option if you don’t want to spend money on tools.
Next step is to understand what parts Ukko log sauna consists of:
Let’s take a look at the sample floor plan (1386 x 1386mm sauna):
Here is a break down for sauna cabin parts:
4 pcs. x corner posts
Every wall has 2 x wall profiles (in the example above, we have 4 walls therefore 8pcs needed)
Wall connecting strips (in the example above 9pcs required)
3 pcs. x Door jam profile
8 pcs x Sauna base and top frame profile
T&G logs for sauna walls (we will explain later how to calculate how many you need)
Sauna door (glass or traditional)
Sauna ceiling panels (we will explain later how to calculate numbers)
4 pcs. of top trim pencil rounded timbers to make nice looking sauna finish
This is all you need to build your sauna cabin.
Now, we will talk about the most exciting part – the cost and how to calculate what length and numbers required for the walls and ceiling.
All timbers supplied in certain length with 300mm difference starting at 0.9m length (next length would be 1.2, 1.5, 1.8, 2.1 and so forth). Prices change with length increase.
So let’s assume you want your sauna to be 1940mm in overall height (our standard) – that’s from the bottom sauna base to the top of the sauna ceiling and you want to make sauna as per floor plan above 1386x1386mm.
Prices breakdown and calculations (prices as of Oct 2013, could change without notice):
Prices are per linear meter (per 1m in length) for all sauna cabin timbers incl. GST:
Corner posts (4 pcs for any sauna):
65x65mm corner post @ 1.8m* length – $55.50
65x65mm corner post @ 2.1m length and up – $75.50 (if you want your sauna to be higher)
*Timber length is always longer than it is said (e.g. 1.8m length is actually will be about 1830mm to allow enough timbers to cut the edges therefore you can use 1.8m length to make it 1820mm long).
For the sample sauna we would use 65x65mm corner posts at 1.8m length – therefore we do the following:
1.8 (total length) x 55.50 (price per Lm) x 4 (number of pcs required) = $399.60
If your sauna is higher than you have to do the same as above but instead of $55.50 you put $75.50 price.
Sauna wall profile:
65x40mm wall profile @ 1.8m length – $27.50
65x40mm wall profile @ 2.1m length and up – $36.50 (if you want your sauna to be higher)
Based on the floor plan, we’ve worked out that we need 8 pcs. for four sauna walls at 1.8m length, therefore we need to perform the same calculations as above:
1.8 x 27.50 x 8 = $396
Wall Connecting Strips:
For the sauna above with 4 walls and one door we need 9 pcs. (only one strip is needed for the jamb in this case). The best way to work out how many you need per sauna is to add 2 pcs per corner post and one pcs. in between the walls and door jamb if for example you have longer sauna and decided to split one wall in two sections… If unsure you can always contact us…
29x15mm connecting strips @ 2.1m length – $6.50
So total for 9 pcs at 2.1m length would be $122.85 (2.1 x 6.5 x 9)Door Jamb Profile (always need 3 pcs no matter the size of the sauna):
65x38mm Door jamb profile @ 1.8m length – $31.90
65x38mm Door jamb profile @ 2.1m length – $39.90
Total for 3 pcs at 1.8m length would be $172.26 (1.8 x 31.9 x 3)Sauna base and top frame profile (always 8 pcs required per sauna):
65x40mm top/base profile @ 1.5m length – $20.50
65x40mm top/base profile @ 1.8m and up length – $26.50
Since in our example the sauna size is over 1.2m length and width, we would need to use 1.5m length timbers:
Total for 8 pcs at 1.5m length is $246 (1.5 x 20.50 x 8)
130 x 38mm T&G logs for sauna walls:
The length of the timbers and q-taties depend on the size of the sauna. Logs come in the following lengths:
0.9 – 1.5m length: $21.80
1.8m length – $27.80
2.1m length – $44.50
Coverage for a single log profile is 130mm.
Based on the sample design our sauna walls are 1820mm in height. Therefore in order to work out how many pcs required for the wall, we need to divide 1820 (length) / 130 (cover) which equals to 14 pcs. per wall.
Very important to remember that is always better to order 10% morethan needed to allow for damage (we work with Cedar timbers and things like that happen all the time). We recommend to order 16 pcs instead of 14 to allow for that.
Now let’s work out total cost for all the wall logs:
Front wall requires 16 pcs at 900mm length = $313.92 (0.9 x 21.8 x 16)
2 x side walls require 32 pcs at 1.2m length = $837.12 (1.2 x 21.8 x 32)
Back wall require 16 pcs at 1.2m length = $418.56 (1.2 x 21.8 x 16)
Total for all 4 walls would be $1,569.60
Sauna door (glass or traditional):
Sauna glass door package in Cedar frame with stainless steel hinges, roller catch and Cedar handles (must be assembled) – $550
Traditional Cedar sauna door package with stainless steel hinges, roller catch and Cedar handles (must be assembled) – $990
So if we are going for sauna glass door package total is $550.Note: Door packages come in separate parts and must be assembled on site to match door jamb. You might need to belt sand or plain a bit to achieve a good fit.
130 x 38mm Sauna ceiling panels:
0.9 – 1.5m length: $19.80
1.8m length – $25.80
2.1m length – $42.50
Coverage is the same as sauna log timbers 130mm. To work out how many pcs required, we need to divide length (or width) of the sauna to 130.
1386 / 130 = 11pcs and add 10% extra which makes the number for the ceiling boards to be 12pcs.
Total for ceiling boards 1.5 (length) x 12 (pcs) x 19.8 (price/Lm) = $356.40
Top trim pencil rounded timbers (need 4 pcs for every sauna):
90 x 18mm P/R profile @ 0.9 – 1.8m length – $7.50
90 x 18mm P/R profile @ 2.1 & up length – $9.50
For our above sauna we would need 4 pcs at 1.5m length which makes total cost for top trims $45 (1.5 x 7.5 x 4)
1.38 x 1.38m Western Red Cedar cost summary:
4 x corner posts: $399.60
8 x wall profiles: $396
9 x wall connecting strips: $122.85
3 x door jam profile: $172.26
8 x sauna base/top frame profile: $246
T&G logs for sauna walls: $1,569.60
Sauna door glass in frame package: $550
Sauna ceiling panels: $356.40
4 x top trim panels: $45
TOTAL MATERIALS FOR DIY SAUNA ROOM incl. GST: $3,857.70
Then, of course you need benches, heater guard rail, heater, rocks & accessories.
As for benches please contact us with your sauna configuration since there are so many options available (e.g. wider, narrow, L-shape, 4 benches with or without head rests and so on).
For the above size materials for two benches are $470
Equipment and Accessories Cost (1.38×1.38m):
3kW heater with built-in controls: $725
Sauna rocks (10Kg): $55
Cedar bucket: $79
Cedar ladle: $49
Heater guard rail: $99
Sauna light fitting: $110
TOTAL FOR EQUIPMENT & ACCESSORIES INCL. GST: $1,186
Total for DIY 1.38 x 1.38m sauna incl. all timbers, equipment and accessories is $5,513.70. Savings of over $1,400 if we are to make it for you. (This size sauna retails for $6,990)
You also need to allow for screws, nails, electrical wiring/connections (which must be done by certified sparky in your area) and delivery cost.
Let’s take one more example. Say you want a bigger sauna room using 1.8 and 1.5m length logs. This is how you calculate overall sauna dimensions:
Back wall: 1800mm (length of the log) plus 56mm (coverage of wall profiles) plus 130mm (corner posts) = 1986mm
Side walls: 1500mm plus 56mm plus 130mm = 1686mm
Front wall: 1986mm (total length) minus 635mm (door with jamb) minus 130mm (corner posts) = 1221mm
We already know what we need:
4 x corner posts: $399.60 (no change)
8 x wall profiles: $396 (no change)
9 x wall connecting strips: $122.85 (no change)
3 x door jam profile: $172.26 (no change)
4 x sauna base/top frame @ 2.1m length: $222.60 (this is to cover long sides of the sauna)
4 x sauna base/top frame @ 1.8m length: $190.80 (this is to cover short sides of the sauna)
